How much does an equine vet generally charge to examine a horse for lameness?
I live in Florida and to clear things up a bit more, I’m looking to buy a horse but I’m going to get it checked out by a vet to be sure that it isn’t lame and in good condition and I was wondering about how much a vet might charge to do that.
Basically what everyone else said about location, but I’ll add that it also depends on how bad the lameness is. I live in PA, USA. Last time I had the vet out, the farm call was $45, the exam was somewhere between $70 and $100 (it’s been a while, I don’t remember) and I had xrays done when it was determined not to be an abcess or similar which was another $100+. With joints, you may also want an ultrasound which is also $100+ (maybe closer to $200 – last horse I had who needed a lameness ultrasound was in 2004ish).
So, depending on the severity of the lameness and the causes anywhere from $150 – $400+. If it’s an abcess or a kick to a muscle, you’re probably looking at the $150 side. If you have no idea what it is and the lameness is really severe, possibly closer to the $250-$300 range to diagnose the problem.
