5 Simple Tips for Working with Interior Decorators
If youve never worked with an interior decorator before, once you start working with one you may find it to be a real eye-opening experience. While its true that not all decorators and the projects are the same, here are a few key tips to consider when working with a design professional.
1. Express Any Ideas, Wants, or Styles You Want for the Project
Unless youre planning on handing over your home to your interior decorator so they can do what they want, you need to make sure that you clearly communicate your desires for the project. So if you already have a certain style in mind for the dcor, be sure to tell the decorator. By making sure you are on the same page when it comes to styles, ideas, and desires you have for the project before the project starts, you will save yourself both time and money.
2. Set a Firm Budget with the Interior Decorator
Its important to take the time to set a firm budget with your decorator and enforce it, or else you may find yourself spending a lot more money than you wanted on your dcor project. Make it very clear to the decorator that you are unwilling to go above a certain dollar amount that you can afford for the project. Be sure to get this budget amount in writing. Then the decorator cant come back and say you never told them a specific limit for expenses.
3. Be Honest with the Interior Decorator
You need to let the designer know right away if they come up with a design plan youre not crazy about. Its silly to go along with a design plan just because you dont want to hurt feelings. Remember, this is your home that you are going to have to live in. If youre not honest with the decorator about your true feelings for any plans or ideas they come up with, you may regret it in the future.
4. Gather Visual Aids for the Decorator If Possible
Its a good idea to gather photographs, diagrams, and other visual aids demonstrating what you want in terms of design. This is hands down the best way to express to your decorator what you are looking for in the design project. Handing someone a picture and telling them this is the style you want is always easier than trying to sit and explain it to them verbally.
5. Stay Involved with the Decorating Project
You dont just want to hand the interior decorator a few pictures, leave them alone for a week, and then expect everything to be just as you envisioned. You dont necessarily have to be constantly supervising the work being done. But you do want to be sure you monitor the progress daily to be sure things are being done the way you want. If you dont regularly check on your decorators progress and just let them work, you may end up finding out that the result isnt what you had in mind.
Working with an interior decorator can be a great experience. This is especially true if you have trouble coming up with great ideas and plans for your home. If you follow these tips, you can help ensure that you have the best possible experience with the decorator you have chosen.
