My pet rat is eating his bedding?
I have 2 male pet rats, and one of them, Delta, is just fine- he’s a chewer, but he never eats weird things. The other one, Jack, eats his bedding. I’ve changed it three or four times to different brands, but every time, he eats it! I used 3 different colors of Carefresh, Kaytee scented bedding, unscented bedding, and one type of wood. With every single one, he’s eaten pieces, especially the lavender scented Kaytee bedding. It’s made of shredded, recycled paper, and it has small pieces of lavender to add the scent- it’s not fake lavender, either. He seems to get a kick out of eating the pieces, not just chewing them.
It seems like every time I change the bedding, he finds something to eat. He’s eating his food and treats, and drinking water. Jack doesn’t seem to be ill or anything- he just seems to have a compulsion to eat his bedding (and basically anything I put near him). Is this safe? Do I need to worry?
As long as you use a non toxic bedding, and don’t let him near anything dangerous to his health it should be fine.
You might have to do additional research bout anything you put near him as you put it, just so you can make sure its not going to be harmful, but I think really, you’d know if something is toxic, and rats can actually eat allot of things without having negative side effects!
